HTC Evo 4G users rejoice – the much-awaited Gingerbread update is now available over-the-air (to those that “check)!
The update will be pushed to devices June 6…users will receive a prompt offering to download and install the update (though you can grab it early via the traditional software update checks). Users are also reporting bug-fixes for both the Gmail and SMS applications. Specifically, the Gmail fixes allow users to link more than one account and view in-email attachments. Battery life is also said to have generally improved, as per HTC’s claims.
On the downside, users are reporting that Netflix no longer works after the update (which is otherwise problem-free). While the app itself loads and works as intended, it fails to play any videos and instead takes users back to the homescreen. The app doesn’t crash, however..and Netflix is aware of the problem and working on a fix.
“We are aware of an incompatibility between our Android app and HTC’s 2.3 update for the HTC EVO 4G. We are investigating the issue.” – Netflix on Twitter
The free upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is delivered over the air at a tasty 110 MB. Sadly, this might be the last major upgrade the Evo 4G will see, and the last one that Google will have a hand in delivering. The only updates users can now hope for are likely ones that come from HTC itself in the form of bug fixes. Android has moved on since the “Evo days” to an Ice Cream flavor that focuses on a tablet-centric interface. However, Google hopes to merge the tablet and phone OSs…and considering that the Evo 4G is technologically capable of handling a lot more than the current version of Android we’re hoping to see more updates in the future.
