Nintendo is giving up on supporting Blu-ray playback and DVD for its next generation Wii U gaming console. The Wii U is conceding the Blu-ray and DVD market to its competitors Sony and Microsoft right from the start. The current Nintendo game console also doesn’t provide slots for DVD and Blu-ray playback, but it was expected that Nintendo would upgrade its future gaming console, which will feature a generous 6.2-inch touch screen controller. Instead, Nintendo is banking on Netflix streaming to appease users’ movie-watching appetites.
Nintendo revealed its shocking plans for the Wii U at the E3 gaming expo, according to CNET. Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata, said the company is focusing on providing users with the ultimate gaming experience, instead of trying to design the new gaming console to serve multiple purposes.
‘”The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies,” Iwata told analysts at the event.”
Currently, Sony’s PlayStation 3 offers gamers both DVD and Blu-ray playback on its gaming consoles. And Microsoft provides DVD playback on its Xbox 360.
But Nintendo doesn’t seem too concerned. The gaming giant is looking towards the future. And the future lies with streaming content.
What do you think? Are you bummed that the Wii U won’t offer DVD and Blu-ray playback on its gaming console? Will Netflix streaming be enough?
