Philips is not a household name by a longshot, but they make average smartphones. The Philips V816 is one such handset. Read on to find out more on the new Philips V816 here in this quick article.
The front of the Philips V816 is a vague remembrance of another popular smartphone, the iPhone 4. It has the glass all the way to the sides and a silver trim. The difference is the trackball instead of an optical trackpad and some extra material under the screen. The size is average for a mid level smartphone. It is 111 millimeters tall by 55 millimeters wide and 13.9 ( .54 inch ) millimeters thick. The Philips V816 does not come with a manual keyboard so all typing will need to be done on the screen.
The Philips V816 has a display that equals 3.2 inches in size. That is not far from an iPhone, which has a 3.5 inch display. The screen has 480 by 800 pixels of clarity. That is below par for smartphones these days. A web page with small text is going to be hard to read. The V816 is a touch screen handset, but the trackball can be used for navigation also. The display features an accelerometer that rotates the view of the display automatically from vertical to horizontal.
The V816 has an older copy of Microsoft’s mobile operating system. It is Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional. In times past, this would have been an average system to have on a smartphone, but no more. Many mobile users had their first memories made with Windows Mobile 6.5, but now it is obsolete. It is like using Windows XP on your smartphone. The menus of Windows Mobile will need a stylus to navigate with speed and the good news is that Philips provided one. It has a plastic pointer to protect the screen of the V816. Windows Mobile 6.5 has been replaced with Windows Phone 7 for smartphones.
Intel is providing the chip for the Philips V816 processor. It runs at what is today considered a slow 416 megahertz. The correspondingly tiny internal memory is just 180 megabytes in size. The storage can be multiplied many times by a MicroSD card. The smartphone has a flash memory slot for one up to 32 gigabytes in size. That is enough for 7000 songs or 40 hours of video without stopping, just with the MicroSD card.
This smartphone has Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE and bluetooth. There is no 3G, 4G or FM radio. The Wi-Fi is up to the “G” mode and the bluetooth is up to the 2.1 level. Both are outdated. Modern Wi-Fi is up to the “N” mode and modern bluetooth is up to the 3.0 level. The Philips V816 has one camera with auto focus and LED flash. It is good enough to take video, but not at high definition levels. It is a five megapixel model.
The Philips V816 has a battery with good capacity. It is 1530 mAh in size. Although it is estimated to last for 16 hours of talk time, expect less. This smartphone will be sold in China, but may not make it to the United States. It will be available within the next few weeks, likely before June.
