Several weeks ago Canonical released the final version of Ubuntu 11.04. The new update replaces the Gnome 2 panel with Canonical’s newly developed Unity UI.

The beta versions of Unity were plagued with poor performance issues…crashing and locking up regularly, though the official version released with 11.04 has improved significantly.

Ubuntu 11.04 in a whole looks fantastic, though some minor annoyances became more apparent after only several days use.

Small inconveniences such as the horizontal application bar not appearing, the inability to open the bottom application bar, etc. Searching for/launching programs that aren’t housed in the application bar can feel delayed.

Unfortunately, these small problems make using Ubuntu 11.04 a bad experience, interfering with common tasks and impeding productivity.

Canonical was definitely working in the right direction with 11.04, but it’s possible their strict 6-month release cycle is forcing out unfinished products with poorly-executed ideas.
